How Many Yards Of Mulch Will I Need?
Measure the length and width of the area in feet. Multiply these figures together to find the area in square feet. Do this for all areas where you want to lay mulch and then add the square footage together to get the total square footage of the areas you need to cover.
Determine how deeply you want to layer your mulch. In most flowerbeds and vegetable gardens, 2 to 3 inches is a good depth. For heavy weed or grass suppression, put down a 6-inch layer.
It’s best to have a professional come out and accurately measure. This will ensure the best price to do so. Additionally, you could avoid the bad back from cleaning and de-weeding beds and shoveling new mulch in!
How Come I Can’t Get My Edging To Look The Right Way?
Around flower beds and trees, the crews use a redefiner head with an M-shaped bade, which digs a more pronounced trench to define the edge more clearly. At the beginning of the season, or for new properties where the beds weren’t edged in the past, Mike Freiberger turns to a powered walk-behind bed edger. Those edges are then maintained with the hand-held stick edger.
One of the keys with edging and trimming is to make sure you keep up with it. Every time a yard is mowed, we edge it and trim around flower beds, fences, and sidewalks. Because it’s done regularly, though, it’s especially important to be careful to follow the proper lines, particularly when edging around flower beds, which is always done with a trimmer.
If you edge every week you keep taking off a half-inch around a flower bed, pretty soon that flower bed is going to be huge. You just want to take off a little bit, just the part that’s growing. Usually, it’s only about one-eighth of an inch, or less. You just want it to be enough to give it a fresh look.

How To Keep Weeds Out Of Mulch
If weeds are present in an existing bed, they must first be eradicated. Pull weeds that may have germinated within or directly next to ornamental plants, and spray a product containing glyphosate (round up) on weeds that are out in the open. As always, take care when using a product like round up as it is absorbed via the foliage of a plant and should not make contact with any ornamental plants. Once the bed is rid of weeds, a granular pre-emergent product should be applied throughout the bed. There are numerous brands of granulated pre-emergent, but the product should have an active ingredient labeled as prodiamine or pendimethalin. This product, as it is watered in, will form a barrier within the soil and prevent the germination of future annual weeds.

Why Would You Worry About Mulching / Edging…
When We Can Take Care Of It Quicker!
Organic mulches will gradually decompose and need replenishing to function effectively as a mulch. Shallow plant roots grow up and into moist mulch and they will die if the mulch is allowed to decay or wash away. How often mulch needs to be replenished will depend on the mulching material. Grass clippings and leaves decompose very rapidly and need to be replenished frequently. Other organic mulches such as cypress mulch, pine bark, and wood chips break down very slowly and need only be replenished every year or two.
Save the time. Spend it doing something less laborer intensive on your home or business.
